Wine Tasting Night

Bring your own favourite wine for a blind tasting event, appetizers provided!

Following the painting event, at 5:30 pm HYC has organized our first-ever Wine Tasting at 5:30 pm. Each participant brings along a bottle of white or red wine concealed in a brown paper bag. There will be prizes for the best and the worst wines. Appetizers will be served all evening.

Cost: $10 per participant plus a bottle of wine.

Painting Event

HYC has organized our first-ever painting event!! 

Cindy will come to the Clubhouse and along with all necessary supplies and equipment and will teach everyone present how to paint a picture.

If you have never been to such an event, it is lots of fun and very relaxing. You will be amazed at the untapped talent you have within you!.

Appetizers will be served and you may BYOB.
When: Saturday July 21 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm
Cost: 10 participants will be $35 each

Bill Hopkins Canada Day Light Parade & Potluck Dinner

We have been specifically asked by the Village of Harrison Hot Springs to help celebrate Canada's 150th Birthday and we hope you can come out and join the fun. Decorate your boat in the afternoon, then join in the potluck and light parade at night! 

The HYC Light Parade has long been a feature of the Canada Day Celebrations in Harrison. It's an opportunity for our club to give something back to the community. HYC boats lit up and parading are a wonderful sight for both young and old alike. Come out and join the fun. Decorate your boat in the afternoon, then join in the potluck and light parade at night! 

Last year, HYC began naming it "The HYC Bill Hopkins Memorial Light Parade" in honour of all the years the deceased long-time member, Bill Hopkins, provided generators, organization and good cheer for this festivity.

LIGHTING SUGGESTIONS:

- A string of 100 LED outdoor lights uses somewhere between 5-8watts. A low cost inverter can easily handle this type of load. These inverters can be purchased from Canadian Tire for example. They don’t have to be permanently installed (hard wired in) but instead be connected to a 12-volt battery with the alligator style clips provided with the inverter. 
- Dig out the Christmas lights, more is definitely better.

Commodore Sail Past + Pig Roast Dinner

Jump on your boat and sail past your Commodore to offer a salute! Gather at the club for wine and cheese immediately following. You can then look forward to a Happy Hour and  Pig Roast at the end of your boating day!

11:00am: Commodore's Sail Past - please plan on arriving by 10:30 or earlier to allow for the Captain's instructions which will be supervised by John Williams, our Past Commodore.)

History of the Sail Past:

The sail past tradition began at the first Yacht Club that was formed at Cowes in England nearly 200 years ago. The membership at Cowes was primarily aristocratic and many were familiar with naval practice and tradition. Cowes Yacht Club subsequently changed its name to the Royal Yacht Squadron and certain social graces were added to the traditional naval practices.

The actual “review of the fleet” is steeped in more than 600 years of Royal Navy tradition and history and was introduced in Yacht clubs as a continuation of the naval habit of having Admirals (and/or Royalty) review the fleet on special occasions.

Protocol demanded that a flagship be anchored with the Admiral and staff on the quarterdeck to receive and return the salute. Vessels sailed past, dipping their colors in salute, and with their captain also saluting with the ship’s company standing at attention. The Vice Admiral would lead the fleet passing in review and the final vessel in the line would carry the Rear Admiral.

This has been an on going tradition of our Yacht Club since its conception, come out and enjoy this event, meet new members, and maybe see some old friends.

Pirate Poker Run + Potluck + Live Band

Join us for the ANNUAL PIRATE POKER RUN, organized for many years now by our fellow pirate, Don Guthrie. Don't forget to wear your best pirate outfit! This event will be followed by a potluck and live band performance from "Leaded".

  • Poker Run Entry Fee: $10/poker hand

  • Prizes: best poker hand; Come as a pirate to get your name in the draw box to become "Pirate of the Year" and win some booty!
  • How it works: There will be five poker stations on the lake. Participants will motor to each station to receive one card for their hand. Best poker hand back at the yacht club wins. (Note: This is not a race.)

A quorum of the membership of the HYC will be asked to approve the newly drafted "Harrison Yacht Club Constitution, Bylaws and Schedules" as per the provisions of the new Societies Act of British Columbia.  A quorum of the HYC membership must be present in order to vote on the amendments made by the HYC Constitution Committee.

A Volunteer Appreciation Party will be held immediately following the vote at the HYC Clubhouse! All volunteers who have helped over the past year with events or behind the scenes are invited to a wine & cheese. You know who you are!

The afternoon will close with the traditional wine and cheese social.

Green Cup Sailboat Race

The Green Cup is a coveted trophy race and all sailors should sign up! This annual event has been a club tradition for many years and usually brings out great competition!

If anyone is interested in racing for the Green Cup, please email Don Guthrie ASAP at dguthrieca@aol.com.  If you need crew, HYC has a few members interested in helping you out.

Here's a little background of the man for whom the trophy bears his name:

Mr. John Green, a past HYC member, has just recently passed away (within the last couple weeks) and this race may be somewhat symbolic and a tribute to him.

John Green claims to have built and sailed the first ever sailboat on Harrison Lake which, until very recently, was moored  at our club for years. As well as a provincial and local politician, he owned our local newspaper for decades.
